Inglwood
circa 1912

Location: Alexandra Centre, Calgary Alberta
size: (approx.) 20'x 80'
Client: The Alexandra Centre
Surface: Concrete block
In the 1950s the stately old Alexandra school was largely obstructed from view by a new gymnasium building.
In 2002, celebrating its 100th anniversary, the school alumni together with the Alexandra Community Centre decided to cover the massive wall with a mural honouring the district of Inglewood as the oldest community in Calgary.
Working directly on the wall with telescoping poles and paint rollers artists begin to construct a picture of 9th Avenue as it may have appeared in 1912 from a similar point of view.
Doors and windows interfering with the illusionary space were painted through and incorporated into the image, respectively.
The deep space illusion effectively dissolves the massive wall transporting the viewer into another time.
